Massage on the brain!? Well… not on the brain. But how do massages affect our brain? We always hear all this jabber about why massages are good for us. We assume it has something to do with the fact that they help us “relax”. But what does this really mean? For all you skeptics (and nerds) out there… let’s take a look at what really happens in the brain when you get a massage. Let’s find out HOW these experiences really help us “relax”. Better yet, let’s find out why they are crucial to our health and wellness.
Stressed out Brain
As we go about our days, we are normally bombarded with stimuli. These stimuli come in the form of emails, texts, street noise, and all the like. Whether we know it or not, all of these stimuli rev up the stress system in our body. This stress system, what we call the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS), or “fight-or-flight” system, shouldn’t always be “on” … We need some way to turn it off or at least calm it down every single day. If not, we tend to feel overwhelmed or even anxious. Normally, to calm this stress system down, we tend to watch TV, eat, or maybe read. Although these are excellent ways to calm it down, we are still being stimulated during these activities.
How to De-stress the Body and Brain
Well what can you do then if you want to shut off your stress system AND avoid as much stimuli as possible? Either you:
- Get a massage!
We prefer b, of course… but we’re biased.
Massage is not only an incredible way to shut down the stress system in our body, but it is also the perfect way to do so without having to go to sleep and miss reaping all the immediate benefits of this calm state.
Massage on the Brain
Studies have shown that massage decreases the stress hormone, cortisol, responsible for a lot of our stress system activity. The physical touch of the massage also releases oxytocin, the powerful messenger in the brain and body that allows us to feel comfort. Furthermore, massage releases serotonin and dopamine in our brain, both which leave us feeling content, rewarded, and even blissful.
This cocktail of chemicals in the body significantly shut down the stress system and leave us feeling reset, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle anything in life. Without this reset at least every couple of weeks (weekly if possible), we tend to kick our stress systems into overdrive. It’s no wonder we feel so overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious… our brain needs a massage!
